VARINIA AKUA

Live set

Strong yet tender sounds, layered with elements of rap and chant—Varinia Akua creates a musical world that defies genre boundaries. Her sound moves fluidly between house, pop, and the driving rhythms of the ballroom and voguing scene, which she helped shape as a member of Germany’s first voguing house. This deep connection to dance is palpable in every beat: playful, powerful, and full of emotion.

Her music is deeply autobiographical, telling stories of personal highs and lows while creating empowering spaces for queer voices and perspectives.

Akua’s debut EP is a self-produced and self-composed homage to the vibrant sounds of the ’80s—drawing on pop, house, disco, ballroom, and voguing influences.
The three tracks—RISE UP, LINE UP, TURN UP—are both a personal statement and a political call to action. They are dedicated to the empowerment of LGBTQIA+ communities and people affected by racism and misogyny.
Varinia Akua’s music touches, uplifts, and invites listeners to find themselves in her melodies and rhythms. Experience her live at the africologneFESTIVAL—and let yourself be carried away by her unique blend of sound, movement, and emotion.
