Strong yet gentle sounds, interspersed with elements of rap and chanting – Varinia Akua creates a world with her music that transcends genre boundaries. Her songs move between house, pop and the pulsating rhythms of the ballroom/voguing scene, which she played a key role in shaping as a member of the first German voguing house. This connection to dance can be felt in every note – playful, cool and full of expressiveness. Her music is deeply autobiographical, tells of personal highs and lows and creates spaces for empowerment and queer perspectives. Akua’s debut EP is mainly inspired by the 80s, pop music, house, disco, voguing and ballroom music and is her own production and composition. The three songs of the EP: RISE UP, LINE UP, TURN UP are an expression of her political stance and are meant to empower people of the LGBTQIA+ community, people who experience racism and misogyny. Varinia Akua touches, inspires and invites the audience to find themselves in the melodies and rhythms. Experience Varinia Akua live at the africologneFESTIVAL and let yourself be carried away by her unique blend of sound, movement and emotion!
